Facebook enters the VR business

Virtual Reality (VR) tha historically been thought of as a technology that is of interest to researchers, gamers and the military. It seems that VR is now being considered as a platform for social media. The following quote is from Mark Zuckerberg via ARS Technica (onlink):

"The history of our industry is that every 10 or 15 years, there's a new major computing platform, whether it's the PC, the web, or now mobile," Zuckerberg continued on a conference call following the announcement. "History suggests that there will be more platforms to come, and that whoever builds and defines these will not only shape all of these experiences that our industry builds, but also benefit financially and strategically." He believe that "vision," in the form of virtual and augmented reality technologies, will form the basis of that next major platform.

As such, the battle for the next generation of social media, gaming, education, and even security seems to have begun.

About Me

Wingspan
As a youngster, we used to have "boxing days" in which the boys of the neighborhood would take turns in boxing matches. I had a distinct advantage in that I had the longest arms. In boxing terminology this is wingspan, a metric which measures fingertip to fingertip distance of outstretched arms. Thus, I think Wingspan is a much more confidence inspiring handle for a medical science blogger than "knuckle dragger"
